Description:
Impressive 1875 Pattern
Twenty Cent Piece
Judd-1411, PR64
1875 20C Twenty Cents, Judd-1411, Pollock-1554, Low R.7, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The obverse is similar to the regular design, although LIBERTY is incused on the shield, much like other Seated Liberty pieces, rather than raised as on the regular issue twenty cent coins. The reverse is also nearly identical to the regular issue, although the leaves in the branch are slightly different, and the stars between the legend and denomination are smaller. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The years 1874 and 1875 saw many pattern twenty cent pieces issued in anticipation of a large coinage of that denomination. In the ninth addition of Judd, Dave Bowers writes: "The year 1875 hosts a potpourri of pattern issues, some with true pattern intent (certain of the twenty-cent pieces may be in this category) and others created as numismatic delicacies, the latter including illogical varieties and mulings."

Physical Description.
An extraordinary proof with excellent contrast beneath a light coat of lovely gold and iridescent toning. The fields are fully and deeply mirrored around the frosty devices. Both sides are pristine and almost entirely free of hairlines or other blemishes. NGC Census: 1 in PR64, 2 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR64, 0 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Unknown.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
(PCGS# 61718)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
