PR66 1875 Sailor Head Half Eagle in Copper, Judd-14391875 $5 Sailor Head Five Dollar, Judd-1439, Pollock-1582, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. William Barber's "Sailor Head" design with a left facing bust of Liberty on the obverse encircled by 13 stars around the periphery. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, the date 1875 is at the lower border. An eagle occupies the central reverse, and is reminiscent of that used on the regular issue trade dollar and twenty cent piece. The eagle is undersized to accommodate statutory legends, including IN GOD WE TRUST, which is unusually located beneath the motif. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Deeply toned with apple-green and rose-pink across the obverse, while the reverse is orange-red and lilac. Minor carbon is present, and the strike is slightly incomplete on Liberty's ear and the eagle's right (facing) leg.
