Description:
1875 Trade Dollar Pattern Struck in Copper
Judd-1430, High R.7, PR66 Red and Brown
Single Finest Certified
1875 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1430, Pollock-1573, High R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Both obverse and reverse are the same as the regular-issue Trade dollar of 1875, but these are struck in copper with a reeded edge. The Judd 10th edition lists the pieces are die trials, but USPatterns.com notes "it is likely that this was deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets. These were struck with the type I reverse with the berry under the eagle's left talon." Aluminum examples are also known of the issue (Judd-1431), both listed as R.8.
While the surfaces have mellowed considerably, there is considerable mint red that remains just beneath the brown seen over most of each side. The devices on the obverse are especially notable with a bright outline of mint red around the figure of Liberty. An exceptionally well-preserved, high grade Trade dollar pattern.
Only four examples are known of this rare pattern. This example in PR66 Red and Brown condition is the only example of Judd-1430 in any grade certified at NGC. PCGS has certified one example each in PR65 Red and Brown and PR65 Red (4/09).
