Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:
1876 'Liberty at the Seashore' Dollar
Struck in Silver, Judd-1467
PR66, Tied for Finest Known
1876 $1 Dollar, Judd-1467, Pollock-1618, High R.7, PR66 NGC. The obverse shows Liberty seated on the seashore, holding an olive branch, with conjoined flags behind her. A steamship is in the distance. Liberty's left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, although the word is rather weak on all examples we have seen. Between the base and the date, IN GOD WE TRUST is presented in a cartouche. The reverse is rather plainly laid out, with ONE DOLLAR in the center, surrounded by an olive wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA rings the upper margin and E PLURIBUS UNUM in small letters at the bottom reverse. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
Three of the five pieces identified in the following roster were struck on Trade dollar planchets, suggesting that this pattern variety was intended as a Trade dollar pattern, even though the reverse inscription suggests otherwise. The Judd-1467, 1468, and 1469 patterns should be included among the many U.S. Trade dollar patterns produced in the 1870s. It is said (by Adams and Woodin) that just five were struck, and we list exactly five different examples below. NGC has certified five submissions, including this and another PR66, a PR65 Cameo, and a PR64. PCGS has certified two submissions, a PR63 and a PR64.
This Premium Gem is tied with the King Farouk specimen as the finest certified, and its aesthetic desirability suggests that it is the single finest known example. Both sides have fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices, created a desirable cameo contrast beneath the gorgeous gray-gold surfaces. The borders have delightful blue and iridescent peripheral toning. The overall appearance is entirely original and pristine, easily a coin for those who desire the best available quality.

We are able to account for the following examples:

1. PR66 NGC. Abe Kosoff, 1/1956, envelope included. The present example.

2. PR66 NGC.
U.S. Mint; W.H. Woodin; Waldo Newcomer; F.C.C. Boyd; King Farouk (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1962; Dr. J.H. Judd (Abe Kosoff, 1962 Illustrated History), lot 485; Bowers and Merena (11/1985), lot 1098; Novoselsky; Kagin's; Heritage (5/2001), lot 9478; Superior (10/2001), lot 2654; Heritage (1/2007), lot 1527. 419.7 grains per Pollock. Plated in Pollock.

3. PR64 Cameo PCGS.

4. PR63 PCGS.
