Desirable 1876 Judd-1484 Half Eagle Pattern1876 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1484, Pollock-1637, R.7, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Struck with regular issue half eagle dies, but in copper with a reeded edge. Such pieces are often referred to as die trials strikings, but Judd-1484 was more likely struck for sale to select dealers or collectors, as part of a denominational off-metal set. All of the 1876 silver and gold denomination coins were also struck in copper. The deep brick-red surfaces reveal pale blue and iridescent toning when rotated under a light. A well struck and carefully preserved specimen. This is the first time that we have handled this particular Judd variety since beginning our auction archives in 1993. (PCGS# 71806)
