High Grade "Sailor Head" Dollar Pattern in Copper, Judd-15421877 $1 Sailor Head Dollar, Judd-1542, Pollock-1715, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. The obverse shows a bust of Liberty facing left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date 1877 below. On the reverse, the denomination 1 DOLLAR is centered within a wreath of corn, wheat, and cotton. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the upper periphery, E PLURIBUS UNUM is around the lower periphery. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. William Barber's popular Sailor Head design is similar to that used on the twenty cent, half eagle, and eagle patterns of 1875 and the dollar patterns of 1876. This design was also used in 1877 on dime, quarter, and half dollar patterns. This is a spectacular, deeply mirrored example that retains much of the original red luster with a slight overlay of oil-slick iridescence in the fields. Virtually flawless and exceptionally pleasing. (#71886) (PCGS# 71886)
