Rare Goloid Metric Dollar Struck in Standard Silver, Judd-15641878 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1564, Pollock-1755, R.(?), PR65 NGC. A head of Liberty faces left on the obverse with 13 stars arranged seven before and six after. Liberty wears a cap inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with wheat, cotton leaves, and bolls. E PLURIBUS UNUM is at the top and the date 1878 is below. On the reverse, 38 stars encircle the inscription GOLOID / METRIC. / 1 - G. / 16.1 - S. / 1.9 - C. / GRAMS 14.25. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination expressed as 100 CENTS is below. Struck in standard silver alloy (90% silver, 10% copper) with a reeded edge. This design is known in two compositions: standard silver as represented here and goloid alloy (5.26% gold, 84.74% silver, and 10.00% copper). The two compositions have a combined rarity rating of R.6 with Pollock (1994) reporting that attempts to break down the rarity factor have foundered because of the tentative nature of many attributions (Judd-1563 for the goloid pieces and Judd-1564 for those in standard silver) assigned to extant examples. Each side presents a moderately toned appearance with varying gray-golden and russet shades scattered over razor sharp devices. The fields are nicely reflective, but slightly subdued due to the overlay of the color. This is the finest example of Judd-1564 we have offered in over 10 years.(#61926) (PCGS# 61926)
