Description

Lovely William Barber 1878 Five Dollar Pattern
Judd-1574, PR65 Red and Brown

1878 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1574, Pollock-1766, R.6, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. William Barber's design shows the head of Liberty and wears a band inscribed LIBERTY incused with E PLURIBUS UNUM around the margin. This portrait is similar in design to the famous Flowing Hair stella. The reverse has an erect eagle with raised wings. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Struck on a wider planchet than a normal half eagle. Approximately 18 pieces are known and several have gilt surfaces. This is a lovely piece that is mostly red still with just a slight bit of mellowing. Well, but not completely struck because of die opposition. A few tiny specks of carbon are scattered over each side. (NGC ID# 3BBP, PCGS# 71937)
