Description

Enjoyable 1878 Five Dollar Pattern in Copper, Judd-1574

1878 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1574, Pollock-1766, R.6, PR66 Brown NGC. William Barber's design that shows the head of Liberty wearing a band inscribed LIBERTY incused with E PLURIBUS UNUM around the margin. This portrait is similar in design to the famous $4 Flowing Hair Stella pattern. The reverse has an erect eagle with raised wings. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The beautifully preserved surfaces are seemingly carbon-free, and display deep reflectivity, with bright orange-red accents around the obverse portrait. Splendid blue-green iridescent highlights burst forth when the specimen is tilted beneath a light. NGC and PCGS have each graded just one proof example of this type (7/04).(#61937) (PCGS# 61937)
