Gem Proof 1879 Judd-1637 Stella, Flowing Hair Design in Aluminum1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1637, Pollock-1835, High R.7, PR66 NGC. Charles Barber's Flowing Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This is a stunning light gray piece with fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices. Except for a few tiny specks on the devices, and faint hairlines that are barely visible in the reverse fields, this is a pristine representative. It is believed that just five or possibly six examples of this pattern are known in aluminum, including two pieces in this sale! Those known to exist include the Garrett-Bass coin, this example that appeared as part of a pattern stella set in Kagin's 50th Anniversary sale, the Jeff Browning Collection specimen, the Polis Collection (Bowers and Merena, 6/1991) example, and the gilt piece also offered in this sale. Five distinctly different specimens are listed here, although specific past pedigrees need further study, as two conflicting rosters were published in the early 1990s.
