1879 50C J-1602, RB
1879 Morgan Half Dollar Pattern, Judd-16021879 50C Morgan Half Dollar, Judd-1602, Pollock-1797, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC. The obverse is essentially identical to the design used on the regular issue Morgan dollar. The reverse shows an eagle with spread wings holding an olive sprig in its right talon, three arrows in its left. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST hangs beneath and around the lower part of the eagle. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR are at the border. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This is one of the few Morgan half dollar patterns we have been privileged to offer for public sale. It is also a coin of extraordinary quality. The surfaces are covered with deep cherry-red color throughout with an occasional flash of deep blue here and there. Deeply mirrored. Other than the placement of the color on each side, the most obvious feature that could be used to trace the pedigree of this important piece is a small area of roughness around the dot between E and PLURIBUS, and frankly we are uncertain if that minor flaw will show up in a catalog photograph.
