1879 Coiled Hair Metric Dollar Pattern1879 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1632, Pollock-1829, Low R.7, PR62 Brown PCGS. This is the rare variety with Liberty featuring a Coiled Hair style, rather than the usually seen Flowing Hair design. A tiny M on the bust truncation confirms this as the work of George Morgan, assistant to the Barber's at the Mint. George Morgan's tenure at the Mint lasted half a century, but it was not until the death of Charles Barber that Morgan finally reached the position of Chief Engraver, a title he enjoyed for only a few short years until his own death. This example has intermingled light and dark brown with splashes tan color near the borders. The surfaces are subdued with little remaining mirrored finish. It is still an attractive and desirable example of the variety.(#62010) (PCGS# 62010)
