One of Eight Pieces Certified in All Grades

1880 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1648, Pollock-1848, Low R.7, PR63 NGC.

George T. Morgan's Liberty Head design as also on Judd-1622. Liberty's hair is done up in a bun, with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters, the Latin motto above, stars seven left, six right. The reverse offers a wreath of cotton and wheat, with inner circle of dots enclosing 895.8 S. / 4.2--G. / 100--C. / 25 GRAMS. DEO EST GLORIA ("God is glory/To God be the glory") appears in a cartouche, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR at the rim. Purportedly struck in goloid with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Likely struck in standard coin-silver alloy, 90% silver/10% copper.

Physical Description.
Gold-tinged rims complement silver-gray centers, with a sharp strike and excellent eye appeal. The moderate field hairlines likely account for the grade, but at first glance the piece nonetheless appears considerably nicer than the Select proof grade. In PR63 this piece is tied for finest at NGC with one other piece, and there are only three certified in total at that service (10/08). There are five certified at PCGS, the finest of them a single PR65.

Provenance.
Unknown.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 62033)
