1881 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1673, Pollock-1874, Low R.7, PR64+ NGC....
1881 Transitional Liberty Nickel in Aluminum1881 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1673, Pollock-1874, Low R.7, PR64+ NGC. Ex: Exemplar Collection. The obverse of this five cent pattern features the as-issued Liberty Head design by Charles Barber, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the date 1881 below. The reverse has a large V in the center for the denomination, surrounded by an open wreath of wheat, cotton, and corn. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. While fairly common in nickel, the copper and aluminum strikings are much scarcer. Only an estimated half dozen are believed known in aluminum. The fields show evidence of heavy die striations, which in turn give the piece a bright mirror-like finish. Few defects can be located on either side of this attractive pattern. (PCGS# 62069)
