Description:
1882 Shield Earring Dollar in Copper, Judd-1703
High R.7, PR66 Red and Brown Cameo
1882 $1 Shield Earring Dollar, Judd-1703, Pollock-1905, High R.7, PR66 Red and Brown Cameo NGC.
Design.
The Shield Earring design of George T. Morgan. A youthful Liberty faces right wearing a band with the usual inscription, the band compressing the back portion of her hair. She wears a shield-shaped earring, with stars six left, seven right, date 1882 below. On the reverse a perched, defiant eagle occupies the center, clutching an olive branch and arrows. The design is reminiscent of the Flying Eagle cent and Gobrecht dollar reverses, although facing right. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR are the peripheral legends. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Both copper and silver three-piece sets of the 1882 Shield Earring quarter, half, and dollar were issued. Not only is the Shield Earring the rarest of the "Big Three" named patterns of the 19th century (the others are the Amazonian and the Schoolgirl), but the copper sets were apparently issued in smaller quantities than the silver pieces, to judge by the paucity of survivors today.

Given the incredible demand for Shield Earring patterns of any denomination and for high-grade silver pattern dollars in particular, this stunning high-grade copper example will provide some fortunate and astute collector with another opportunity to acquire this, one of the most celebrated and coveted of pattern designs in all of U.S. numismatics.

Physical Description.
Generous deep sunset-orange complements tinges of saffron, lilac, and violet, with excellent field-device contrast showing despite the moderately intense coloration. Well deserving of the coveted NGC Star designation for superior eye appeal. USPatterns.com notes that only five pieces are confirmed today, although there are nine pieces (with undoubted duplication) certified between NGC and PCGS combined. NGC has certified two PR67 examples finer, although it is doubtful they surpass the present PR66 Red and Brown Cameo specimen from an aesthetic point of view, regardless of numeric grade (11/08).
