Description

1883 Liberty Nickel Pattern, PR64 Cameo
Magnetic Alloy, Judd-1707

1883 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1707, Pollock-1911, Low R.6, PR64 Cameo PCGS. The obverse motif is similar to the head of Liberty adopted on the regular-issue five cent pieces of 1883, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The reverse shows the experimental composition of this pattern with 75 N./25 C. in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE on the upper border, CENTS on the lower border, with 13 stars arranged seven left and six right at the margin. Struck in a magnetic alloy of 75% nickel and 25% copper with a plain edge.

Five cent patterns of this design were struck in several nickel alloys in 1883 and a version was produced in aluminum as well. Probably more than a dozen examples of Judd-1707 survive in all grades today. This attractive Choice specimen displays well-detailed frosty devices that contrast boldly with the mirrored fields. Accents of lavender and pale gold toning add to the considerable visual appeal. Population: 4 in 64, 8 finer (3/13). (NGC ID# 2AKV, PCGS# 62124)
