Design. The Charles Barber Liberty Head portrait. Here she sports a plain coronet, as the word LIBERTY is at the top rim, with stars six left and seven right, date 1883 below. The reverse displays the regular NO CENTS die of 1883. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.
Commentary. A true Liberty nickel, one of the few that removes the word from the diadem, coronet, shield, or other design elements on which it is usually found throughout U.S. coinage. Perhaps two dozen examples are known of this issue.
Physical Description. Mottled grayish-gold surfaces with a sharp strike display a few scattered, minuscule dark flecks. There is considerable field-device contrast noted, although unrecognized by NGC. NGC Census: 4 in PR64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR64, 10 finer (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Stack's (5/1998), lot 525.
