Description:
The Bass 1885 Snowden Dollar
Struck in Aluminum
Judd-1749, PR65
1885 $1 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1749, Pollock-1961, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS.
Design.
The dies are the regular-issue 1885 Morgan dollar dies, but there is experimental edge lettering as follows: * * * * * * E * / PLURIBUS * / UNUM * * * * *. Struck in aluminum with a tripartite collar for the edge lettering.

Commentary.
This piece hails from the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Harry Bass is noted for his love of the die varieties of U.S. gold, so much so that it bears remembering that he also formed a first-rate assemblage of U.S. patterns. The Harry Bass Core Collection retains an example of the Judd-1747 Snowden dollar struck in silver.

Physical Description.
The silver-white surfaces cede to mellow powder-gray on the device high points and in the fields of each side. There is essentially no sign of contact. A small spot of dark toning on the denticles below the 5 in the date serves as a pedigree marker. This PR65 is one of two so certified at PCGS, and there are two PR66 pieces finer (10/08). NGC has certified four other pieces ranging from PR63 to PR67.

Provenance.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer (4/1973); Bass I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1309.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 62191)
