Description:
Lower Grade And Affordable 1896 Five Cents Pattern By Barber, Judd-1770
1896 5C Five Cents, Judd-1770, Pollock-1987, Low R.6, PR62 PCGS. Charles Barber design shows a shield with 13 stripes on the obverse. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above and the date below. Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and eagle. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. There are 13 stars at the border, arranged 7 left and 6 right. The border is beaded on both sides. The denomination 5 CENTS is centered within a curved olive sprig on the reverse. Struck in some combination of standard coin nickel and perhaps with a smidgen of zinc or some form of German silver (metallurgical studies have not been conducted on this design type), with a plain edge. The surfaces have a flat gray appearance with a very shallow planchet flaw below the RI in PLURIBUS.(#62224) (PCGS# 62224)
