Description:
Amazing Carlos II 8 Escudos
Carlos II gold 8 Escudos 1699-R, KM26.1, Calico 112, MS64 NGC. Carlos II was the last Spanish King of the Hapsburg Dynasty. Due to his young age when rising to the throne at the age of four, Spain was ruled by the King's mother and her friends for years. Not able to produce an heir with either of his two wives, Carlos named a French prince to succeed him. Late in 1700, Carlos passed away at the age of 39, leaving the kingdom much impoverished. In Lima, mintage of gold coins began in 1696. The specimen presented here is dated 1699 bearing P.V.A. It is an absolutely amazing coin. The field details are bold and sharp and "jumping out" of the coin. The color is bright and original mint luster is still present (!). There is a small planchet crack from striking at four o'clock. The Eliasberg specimen in AU55 brought $14,325 in 2005, and the Karon piece in Choice Very Fine realized $7,700 in 1992. We expect this piece to far surpass those figures.
