Description

1896 Barber Quarter, PR69 Ultra Cameo
One of 10 So Graded for the Entire Series

1896 25C PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. As might be expected from the grade, this piece must be grouped along with the finest not only of the issue, but of the entire Barber quarter series. The surfaces on each side show blatant contrast, totally devoid of any hint of patina and equally lacking in visible post-Mint contact, large or small. This 1896 Barber quarter proof is one of 762 coins reported struck, but a "handful of survivors" in the present grade is too generous. NGC records four pieces in the technical grade of PR69, one of which is a non-Cameo, the other three Ultra Cameo, including this piece, one other tied for the same grade, and one a PR69 Ultra Cameo. The 1896 and 1898 quarter productions, like their silver dollar counterparts, are renowned for the excellence of their manufacture. The NGC Census is 10 submissions in PR69 Ultra Cameo for the entire series, with none finer (7/12). Fully struck and fully delightful.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
