Description

Restrike 1842 Proof Half Cent, A Late Die State Example

1842 1/2 C Restrike PR64 Brown PCGS. B-3, Low R.7. This lovely near-Gem is originally preserved with mottled copper-brown and sandy-tan coloration. In addition to pleasing reflectivity, the fields reveal bright, multicolored undertones as the coin turns into the light. With unevenness of strike on both sides and rim crumbling at the left borders, this specimen is a late die state that may have been (per Breen, 1983) one of the final restrike proof Coronet Half Cents produced. A tiny obverse contact mark in the field before Liberty's mouth should help trace the pedigree of this important rarity. (NGC ID# 26Z8, PCGS# 1263)
