Description:
Splendid 1843 B-2 Half Cent
First Restrike, PR64 Brown
1843 1/2 C First Restrike PR64 Brown NGC. SR-5, B-2, R.6. 75.6 grains. The doubled T in CENT identifies this as a First Restrike half cent. This splendid proof has an accompanying envelope that identifies it as G.2, at a price of $75. Bold design details are evident on both sides, with reflective, lightly mirrored fields and gorgeous turquoise-green toning. This proof meets the criteria for Walter Breen's Series I Restrikes: "They tone light iridescent brown, blue, or blue-green." The current population of the 1843 First Restrike proofs is between 20 and 30 coins. Breen discussed 20 pieces in his 1983 Half Cent Encyclopedia
The half cents and large cents consigned to the present sale include 20 pieces with accompanying brown envelopes that identify the date, attribution, grade, and price. As best we are able to determine, the prices suggest that these coins originally traded hands in the 1930s. EAC PR60.
