1843 1/2 C ORIGINAL, BN
1843 Half Cent, Rare Proof Format1843 1/2 C Original PR63 Brown PCGS. B-1a, R.6. This is an aesthetically pleasing, Select quality example with a nearly even blanket of medium brown patina over both sides. Some orange colored outlines around the devices shine forth at certain angles, these being remnants of the original mint luster. A few small, relatively faint toning spots are seen on both sides--the best pedigree markers are one in the obverse field between stars 4 and 5, and another on the reverse over the D in UNITED. We stress, however, that these features are not overly distracting, and the surfaces are free of mentionable contact marks. The sharpness of the die file marks (as produced) near the left obverse denticles differentiates this coin from examples of the B-1b variety. Among those numismatic luminaries who have owned representatives of B-1a are Amon Carter, Jr. and Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., but we do not know the prior pedigree of the present specimen. One of a few dozen examples believed extant (per Breen, 1983).
