Desirable Proof 1844 Original Half Cent1844 1/2 C Original. B-1, R.6. PR65 Brown NGC. PR63 EAC. Small date; Large berries. Breen placed the population at about 16 pieces in his Complete Encyclopedia. The actual number may be closer to 20. Considerable research regarding early proof coins of all denominations needs to be done. With so many "name" collections appearing on the market over the last quarter century, it is difficult to gain an understanding of true rarity for many of these issues. We believe that such research will suggest that many of the early proof coins are not as rare as formerly believed, yet they are all still important pieces of numismatic history. Olive, gold, and violet toning with faded mint red on both sides. The fields are only slightly reflective with little cameo contrast.
