Description:
Seldom Offered 1848 Proof Half Cent, A Rare B-1a Original
1848 1/2 C Original PR61 Brown PCGS. B-1a, Low R.7. The date logotype that the Mint used to prepare this obverse die was the same that it used for the 1848 Liberty Half Eagle. A rare issue in all grades, Breen confirms only 11 examples in his 1983 Half Cent monograph. This is really not a bad looking coin for the grade, although mottled charcoal colored spots around the obverse periphery are noted. The balance of the surfaces are mostly antique-copper in shade with a few splashes of steel-gray patina near the upper reverse border. The well centered, needle sharp strike is free of criticism. (NGC ID# 26ZJ, PCGS# 1296)
