Description

Very Rare 1848 Original Proof Half Cent, Near-Gem Condition

1848 1/2 C Original PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Breen-1a, Low R.7. Breen estimates that at least 14 pieces are extant today in all grades, making this one of the rarest and most desirable of all proof half cents. The 1848 is so scarce that it has even been copied with several electrotypes known. Both services combined have certified only six Red and Brown coins, with only one Gem known (an NGC coin). The fields on this piece are deeply reflective. The obverse retains approximately half of the original red luster with the margins having a dusky blue-brown patina. The reverse is mostly deep blue with strong underlying mint red still visible beneath the overlay of color. A lovely example of this rarity in the half cent series and very close to full Gem quality. (PCGS# 1297)
