1857 1/2 C, BN
Near-Gem Proof 1857 Half Cent1857 1/2 C PR64 Brown NGC. B-1B. This more frequently encountered proof variant from 1857 shows doubling on the T in CENT and the ribbon. Still, a very scarce issue in proof format with probably only a couple of dozen examples believed known. The striking details are uncommonly sharp, as only seen on proofs, and the rims are wide around each side. Light hairlining is evident, but only with the aid of a magnifier. The deeply mirrored fields provide a bright background for the subtle variation in hues seen over each side of this basically brown coin. This piece was consigned by the same collector who also owned the proof 1857 Large Cent also seen in this sale. If both pieces remain together in the future, they could form the foundation for an 1857 proof set. (NGC ID# 26ZY, PCGS# 1332)
