Description:
Scarce Gem Proof 1857 Half Cent, B-2
1857 1/2 C PR65 Red and Brown NGC. C-1, B-2, R.4. Ex: Pittman Collection. This is a scarce variety that is readily identifiable by a double impression on the T in CENT (lesser doubling is apparent on EN, and on ALF in HALF). This particular example combines a mostly purple-red obverse with a predominantly mint-red reverse. The strike is razor-sharp in all areas, and there is mild but appreciable reflectivity in the fields. Both sides are contact-free. EAC PR60. Census: 4 in 65, 1 finer (11/06).
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (David Akers, 10/97), lot 164, purchased by Pittman at the 1948 ANA convention from Milford Stamp & Coin for $20.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 26ZY, PCGS# 1333)
