Description

Superb Gem Proof 1916 Nickel

1916 5C PR67 NGC. "Effective at once, you will please discontinue the manufacture of proof coins." With that sentence in late 1916, Mint Director Frederich von Engelken ended regular production of proof sets for the next two decades. At the time, only 600 two-coin minor proof sets had been issued, each containing a matte proof Lincoln cent and a Buffalo nickel such as the present piece. This beautifully textured and carefully preserved specimen has generous satiny nickel-white luster with pale gold and peach overtones gracing parts of each side. Census: 18 in 67, 1 in 67 , 1 finer (3/11).
