Cameo Gem Proof JR-2 1831 Dime1831 10C PR65 Cameo NGC. JR-2, R.7 as a proof. Early United States Dimes, published in 1984 by the John Reich Collectors Society stated that JR-2 "is clearly scarce and difficult to locate in EF condition. Finest seen is EF-40 ... At least three proofs have been seen from this pair of dies." In the 1992 Stack's auction of the legendary Floyd T. Starr collection, the cataloger noted for lot 356, "fewer than 10 proofs are believed to survive. Missing from the Bareford, Hawn, and Garrett sales." The Eliasberg collection also lacked a proof 1831 dime.
This is a magnificent Gem proof with full definition on the portrait and eagle. The denticles are sharply squared off, unlike on business strikes which tend to show a slope between the denticle edge and the field. The flashy fields display light lavender toning, while the borders exhibit medium forest-green shades. The toning pattern must identify the specimen, since there are no visible detractions.
