Description:

1836 O-116 Half, PR65
50 Over 00 Reverse
1836 50C 50/00 Lettered Edge PR65 PCGS. O-116, R.7 as a Proof. Four different varieties of 1836 Lettered Edge half dollars are known in proof, and the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars are also known in proof, an example also offered in the present sale. It is intriguing that two of the four proof varieties are blundered die varieties. Two or three proof examples are known of O-108, the 1836 over 1336 variety, and perhaps half a dozen proof examples of the present variety, the 50 over 00 reverse, are known. In addition to those proofs, two or three O-101 proofs are known, along with three or four proof O-109 half dollars.
This example is tied for the finest PCGS-certified proof 1836 Lettered Edge half dollars, the 10 certified pieces including five PR63, one PR64, one PR64 Cameo, two PR65, and one PR65 Cameo (11/12). NGC has certified eight 1836 Lettered Edge proofs, including two PR63, five PR64, and in PR67.
A splendid Gem proof striking of this important and highly collectible Capped Bust half dollar, The fields are deeply mirrored and each side is covered with rich cobalt-blue and gray toning. There are no mentionable contact marks on either side, and the only strike weakness is on the upper obverse stars and at the lower reverse. A rare and important opportunity to acquire this highly collectible, blundered denomination half dollar in proof format.
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2006), lot 1155.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
