Description

1835 B-7 Quarter, PR63
Extremely Rare Proof Strike

1835 25C PR63 PCGS. B-7, High R.7 as a Proof. The Condition Census data in Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint indicates that there are six proof 1835 quarters known, including one example of Browning-1 and five of B-7. The grades recorded in that reference are PR65, PR64 (B-1), PR64, PR63, PR63, and PR60. The finest of those is in the Smithsonian Institution, leaving only five in collectors' hands.

Dappled golden-brown and dove-gray colors endow this meticulously struck specimen. Despite the rich toning, the fields are flashy and show no evidence of cartwheel luster. Some moderate marks are detected on the left obverse; these are by no means conspicuous because of subsequent toning. A small planchet flaw is seen beneath the first star and Liberty's neck, and serves to identify the present piece in the event of future auction appearances. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (7/13).
Ex: Lester Merkin (2/1971), lot 574; Auction '82 (RARCOA, 8/1982), lot 717; American Numismatic Rarities (9/2003), lot 266; Heritage (12/2005), lot 607; Stack's (1/2009), lot 317. (NGC ID# 27HE, PCGS# 5383)
