Proof-Only 1836 Half Cent
B-1 Original, Red and Brown PR64

1836 1/2 C PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. B-1, R.5. A challenging half cent issue with originals (such as the present piece) distinguished from first restrikes by the absence of buckling in the center of the obverse. The first restrikes also have squared-off dentils. In addition, five second restrikes are known, identified by the Reverse of 1840. The 1836 is the only proof-only date of the Classic Head type, although business strikes of the 1831 are very rare. This well struck specimen has lovely multicolor toning with cherry-red, olive-green, lilac, and powder-blue shades evident on both sides. Exceptionally attractive for a near-Gem, since the sole imperfections are two minute spots at the obverse center and a solitary tiny tick on the jaw.
