Gem Cameo Proof 1903 Jefferson Gold Dollar1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/Jefferson PR66 Cameo PCGS. One hundred proof Jefferson and one hundred proof McKinley Gold Dollars were struck in 1903. Apparently most proofs were mishandled, damaged, or circulated, which means that the few survivors that are extant were carefully preserved, and are infrequently available today, even in major auctions. Unlike other proof commemoratives, proof Jefferson and McKinley Dollars are not easily confused with well produced business strikes. These coins "carry their own credentials." And so it is with this piece. The fields are highly reflective and the devices display a moderate amount of frost which produces a lovely cameo effect between the fields and devices, as is noted on the PCGS holder. As an identifier, one tiny toning spot is seen under the S and T of STATES in the obverse field. An exceptional coin and a rare opportunity for the advanced commemorative collector. Population: 5 in 66, 2 finer (3/06). (PCGS# 7482)
