Description:
Brilliant Proof 1903 McKinley Portrait Gold Dollar
1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR63 NGC. An unmistakable proof example of the McKinley design Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollar with bright greenish-gold surfaces. Although 100 proof examples of this issue were reportedly struck, few have survived with unimpaired surfaces. In addition to these coins, another 100 proof examples were coined with the Jefferson portrait design. Each of these has approximately the same rarity today. This proof example, like all of the other known proofs, has substantially sharper detail than any of the non-proof examples. The hair detail is sharper, McKinley's lapel pin is fully detailed, and even the leaves in the olive branch show some internal definition. Minor lilac and copper toning spots are evident. Deeply mirrored fields serve to frame the portrait of McKinley on the obverse and the olive branch design of the reverse, with a trace of cameo contrast. (PCGS# 7483)
