Attractive 1903 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley Gold Dollar1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR65 PCGS. Of the 1903 McKinley commemorative gold dollars, David Bowers, in his Commemorative Coins of the United States, writes: "One hundred specimens ... were struck with Proof finish and were distributed to favored insiders as well as Exposition (the Louisiana Purchase Exposition held in St. Louis in 1904) and government officials, not to the collecting fraternity." This perhaps helps to explain the preponderance of less-than-Gem proof examples of the 50 or so coins certified by PCGS and NGC.
This proof Gem specimen displays rich orange-gold patina interspersed with lime-green overlying luminous surfaces. The design elements are sharply struck throughout. A few wispy hairlines on the cheek are mentioned for accuracy. Each side generates excellent overall eye appeal. Population: 11 in 65, 6 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 7483)
