Description:
Rare And Desirable Proof-66 1903 McKinley Gold Dollar
1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR66 NGC. While generally not a worthy issue, the 1903 McKinley gold dollar in proof format is a very rare and very desirable item. Only 100 proofs were produced and attrition has taken a heavy toll on that original number. Very few seem to have survived as recognizable proofs today. In fact, only 47 pieces have been certified by the two major services to date with an unknown number of resubmissions concealed in that number. This is one of the finest examples extant today and it is tied with five others at both of the major services and only one coin is finer (a PCGS piece). The fields are deeply mirrored and glassy with a slight amount of mint frost over the devices. A few tiny planchet flakes are noted in the right obverse field but the surfaces overall are exceptionally clean and free from any mentionable post-striking impairments.(#7483) (PCGS# 7483)
