Description:
1971-S Silver Clad Eisenhower Dollar
Type One Reverse, Third Example Certified
Distinctive Nixon-Themed Packaging
PR68 Ultra Cameo
1971-S $1 Silver -- Type One/Low Relief Reverse, Doubled Die Obverse -- PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Band-certified in the black Treasury plastic holder of issue, as is a regular or "Type Two" 1971-S Silver Eisenhower Dollar, PR67 Cameo NGC, included for comparison purposes. The two pieces also come with distinctive packaging, a variation on the cardboard "Brown Box" that has a gold-colored plastic replica of the Seal of the President of the United States and embossed facsimile signature "Richard Nixon" below.

This is the first Type One 1971-S Ike dollar graded by NGC and is currently the highest graded example. As reported by Charles Morgan and Hubert Walker in Coin Week on March 7, 2013, the Type One Silver 1971-S dollar appeared in the special packaging on eBay with a story (unverified) about how it was distributed at a presentation ceremony with President Nixon and the widowed Mrs. Eisenhower in attendance. Discoverer Andy Oskam found that the coin showed the so-called "Low Relief" or Type One reverse, which (compared to the more familiar Type Two) has more intricate detail on the eagle's breast feathers and clearly defined islands in the Caribbean Sea on the background Earth.

This reverse is associated with the business strike silver-clad and copper-nickel-clad 1971-S Ike dollars as well as certain 1972 copper-nickel Ikes, but this is only the third certified example of a proof 1971-S silver-clad Eisenhower with the Type One reverse. Early speculation had the Doubled Die Obverse as an FS-103, but close examination does not show an immediate match in the Cherrypickers' Guide and NGC does not attribute the doubled die. This intriguing Eisenhower dollar offers an exciting opportunity for the vanguard collector of the series.
