Description:
Remarkable 1858 Small Letters
Flying Eagle Cent, PR64 Cameo
1858 1C Small Letters PR64 Cameo PCGS. Richard Snow's Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents recounts how the U.S. Mint was engaged in rampant pattern production for small cents in 1858. Sets of a dozen coins, 11 of them patterns, were sold for a few years thereafter, and the one regular-issue coin in each set was a Small Letters 1858 Flying Eagle cent proof, like the piece offered here. Pale copper-orange surfaces show blushes of peach at parts of the margins, and the reverse shows prominent die polish lines, especially within the wreath. Both sides offer uncommonly strong contrast for the type. A few small flecks and a surface blemish between the I in UNITED and the wing contribute to the grade. (PCGS# 2044)
