Immensely Popular Stella Pattern, Judd-1635, Pollock-1832, 1833, PR55 PCGS1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1832, 1833, R.3, 6, PR55 PCGS. The "stella," or four dollar gold piece, technically a pattern issue, has been elevated by its own popularity to inclusion among regularly issued coins, much like the 1836 Gobrecht Dollar, or the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent.
The specimen offered here is very nicely detailed throughout, with a few wispy hairlines in the fields on each side. Three or four trivial blemishes reside on the upper reverse, and there is a mere hint of wear on Liberty's temple. Both sides exhibit a pleasing greenish-gold tint. Overall, this lightly circulated piece represents a very pleasing example of this immensely popular gold pattern. (#8057) (Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28AZ, PCGS# 8057)
