Description:
1879 Flowing Hair Stella, XF Details
Accessible Example of Famous Type
1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1832, R.3, -- Plugged, Harshly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF Details. The 1879 and 1880 gold stellas are sufficiently famous and distinctive that they receive a full page of attention in the 2014 Guide Book, where they are listed in the gold section despite their technical status as patterns. In his 1988 Encyclopedia, Walter Breen discusses the well-known numismatic legend about stellas appearing on the necklaces of D.C. madams, perhaps with the present piece in mind. It has a prominent plugged hole, which affects the C for "copper" in the obverse legend and much of the word FOUR on the reverse. The reverse has a decent appearance aside from the plug at 6:30, but the obverse displays wear on the portrait, and that side is bright and hairlined from cleaning. Yet for many collectors who would otherwise be shut out of owning this famous issue, all the problems taken together are not enough to wipe away this truth: it is still a Stella.
