Description:
1856 Slanted 5 Gold Dollar, PR64
One of Perhaps 10 Known
Superior Eye Appeal
1856 G$1 Slanted 5 PR64 PCGS. CAC. All known 1856 gold dollars in proof are the Slant 5 variety. These are very rare; Bowers (2008) estimates eight to 10 specimens extant, and Garrett and Guth (2008) likewise suggest that "fewer than 10 coins can be accounted for." PCGS has graded a mere two examples, the present near-Gem being one of these. NGC has seen only six specimens.
Rich orange-gold surfaces are imbued with traces of mint-green and exhibit exquisitely impressed design elements. The obverse portrait is mildly frosted and well highlighted against the mirrored fields, with the reverse just slightly less so. Die polish lines are visible in the fields. Were it not for an unobtrusive graze in the left obverse field (an excellent pedigree marker) this piece might well have attained Gem status. It yields superior eye appeal. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25DX, PCGS# 7606)
