Description

1858 Gold Dollar, PR64
Historic Early Proof Issue

1858 G$1 PR64 PCGS. This near-Gem proof 1858 gold dollar is a breathtaking example of early U.S. proof gold, both aesthetically, within and of itself, and because it represents the first year that proof coins, of any kind, were finally marketed by the Mint to the collecting public. There is no report of how many proofs were actually sold to the public or manufactured, but in any case, there cannot be more than a handful that survive today in all grades combined. This lovely orange-gold piece is certified in an old-style PCGS holder. A small curving lintmark, as made, appears above DO in the reverse. Considerable field-device contrast is present on both sides, and a thin mark appears on Liberty's cheek along with a few minor luster grazes and die striations in the fields. Population: 7 in 64, 1 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25DZ, PCGS# 7608)
