Description:
1882 Gold Dollar, PR68 Ultra Cameo
Finest Certified by NGC
1882 G$1 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. This astonishingly beautiful specimen is the sole finest Ultra Cameo proof for the issue certified by NGC (2/12), and its inherent quality is readily apparent both up close and from far away. Each side sports fantastic black-and-gold contrast with the devices sharply struck and amply frosted. Virtually flawless mirrors supply outstanding contrast, and the eye appeal is overwhelming. Examination with a strong magnifier only reveals a couple of tiny planchet voids in the fields on each side. The fields also display a light orange-peel effect, a result of the gold planchet having been overheated in an annealing oven previously set at a higher temperature for a silver, nickel, or copper proof planchet.
As noted in Garrett-Guth, business strikes have a normal 2 in the date, but the proof strikings show a defective 2, most likely a result of repunching. They also note that the finest example is a PR67. This stunning coin is every bit a PR68, and certainly deserves top honors as the finest certified 1882. In fact, it is only tied in the entire series with two other Ultra Cameo coins and 10 Cameo pieces (2/12). This is a simply splendid example of this widely popular proof gold dollar issue, at 125 pieces struck the first three-figure proof mintage for the denomination since 1861.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2009), lot 1494; Los Angeles Signature (Heritage, 8/2009), lot 1202.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25ES, PCGS# 97632)
