Description:

1884 Gold Dollar, PR65 Ultra Cameo
Single Finest at NGC
1884 G$1 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Business-strike gold dollars of 1884 are often seen with reflective fields, causing early catalogers to list many circulation-strike examples as proofs and inflating their estimates of the surviving population. Proofs are slightly more available than dates from previous years, but they are less plentiful than one might imagine from the mintage of 1,006 pieces. Apparently, quite a few proofs were used for jewelry purposes, which severely reduced the supply of coins available for numismatists.
The present coin is a magnificent Gem specimen, the single finest Ultra Cameo example certified at NGC (7/11). The fields of this piece go "black" with unfathomable depth of reflectivity when the coin is angled in the light. Contrasted against this is the thick mint frost on the devices, which creates a stark, two-toned appearance. Close inspection reveals the orange-peel effect seen on many proof gold pieces from this era. A few tiny lint marks are scattered over each side, and there is a shallow flake in the obverse field below the chin of Liberty. This coin should be a welcome addition to a fine collection of gold dollars.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EU, PCGS# 97634)

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
