Select Two-Toned Proof 1885 Gold Dollar1885 G$1 PR63 NGC. In his book United States Gold Coins: An Analysis of Auction Records, David Akers states: "The proof 1885 gold dollars were struck from 4 different die varieties and collectively the proof of the issue is reasonably available." The present example displays deep, glassy fields and thickly frosted devices although the early NGC holder fails to list this as a Cameo. Light milky haziness overlays both sides in a somewhat mottled fashion, but vibrant champagne-gold color dominates both sides. In sum, this is a lovely coin and an important survivor from an original production of only 1,105 pieces.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EV, PCGS# 7635)
