Description

1886 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Only 10% Survive From the Original Mintage

1886 G$1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. While the official mintage of proof gold dollars in 1886 was 1,016 specimens, probably only 100 to 140 pieces have survived. Bowers succinctly writes: "Proofs are much less available than the generous mintage figure suggests." Condition rarity is also in play with a coin so fine as this Premium Gem specimen, a bounteously mirrored lemon-yellow example with sharp and frosty devices jutting out from the fields. This well-preserved and gorgeous specimen is tied for numerically finest among four Cameo coins listed in the PCGS Population Report (11/12).
