Description:
1888 Gold Dollar, Gem Proof Ultra Cameo
Strongly Contrasted
1888 G$1 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. If there are any good values, perhaps even undervalued coins among proof gold, it would certainly be in the gold dollar series. While the mintage was substantial, only 150 to 200 examples are estimated extant today. Most, however, do not exhibit the strong field-device contrast seen on this piece. In fact, only six such pieces have been certified by NGC with 10 finer (11/12). This is an unquestioned proof striking with no hint of cartwheel in the fields. Each side exhibits rich orange-gold color and heavily frosted devices. Several curious die striations are seen in the upper obverse field, and a couple of minor lint marks are on the reverse.
