Description

1889 Gold Dollar, Gem Cameo Proof
Difficult to Locate in High Grades

1889 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. The 1889 gold dollar is a curious issue. The mintage of proofs was a whopping 1,779 pieces. However, there is considerable evidence to suggest that mishandling occurred in the Philadelphia Mint. The 1889 is more likely to be found mishandled or in lower grade than any other date in the series. This is not one of those pieces. This is a sparkling Gem proof with significant mint frost over the devices and deep mirrors in the fields. The only flaws we see are a small planchet flake out of the right obverse field, and several tiny lint marks in the reverse fields. Both sides display significant orange-peel texture, commonly seen on late 19th century gold proofs. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 8 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EZ, PCGS# 87639)

I know for a fact that the sale by Heritage was way beyond what I was offered by other people. If I had to do it over again, I would absolutely choose Heritage again.
